Deepawali or Diwali

Deepawali or Diwali means the ‘festival of lights’. On this occasion-अकैश़न-मौका, houses, shops and streets are decorated with earthen-अर्थन- मिट्टी का बना हुआ lamps or lightings at night. It is an important and popular Hindu festival. It is celebrated all over India and the world. It comes on the last day of the dark half of Kcirtika, a month of Hindu lunar-लूनर-चन्द्र संबंधी calendar (October-November).

Houses are cleared of unwanted clutter- अवांछित अव्यवस्था and whitewashed वाइट्वाश्ट. Lots of sweets are prepared and exchanged. Mutual- म्यूचूअल-आपसी relations of love and friendship are established. All enmity-एन्मिटी-दुश्मनी is forgiven- फॉर्गिवन-माफ़ and forgotten-फॉर्गाटन-भूला-बिसरा and people embrace-इम्ब्रैस- गले से लगाना each other.

On Deepawali, the goddess of wealth-धन, Lakshmi is worshipped वर्शप्ट. It is an occasion of gaiety- उल्लास-गेइटी, mirth-मर्थ- खुशी, rejoicing-रिजॉइसिंग-हर्षोल्लास and festivity- फेस्टिविटी-बधाई. People dress themselves in their colourful best and roam- रोम-घूमना-फिरना about the bazaars and streets, enjoying the illumination-इलूमनैशन- जगमगाहट at night. People indulge-इन्डल्ज- आनंद-लूटना in buying sweets, jewellery, clothes and utensils यूटेन्सल्ज़- बर्तन.

Deepawali marks the coming of the new season. It marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory विक्ट्री- विजय over Ravana. It is also said that on this day Lord Krishna killed the demon- डीमन-राक्षस Narakasura. The Hindus observe this day with great festivity.

Deepawali is meant for happiness and prosperity-प्रास्पेरटी-सौभाग्य, so we should not pollute the environment by bursting-बर्स्टिंग crackers-क्रैकर्ज़-पटाखे.
